How to use your net worth statement

Gather current balances, realistic resale estimates and outstanding debt balances for the same date. Choose Quick totals for a simple answer or Detailed worksheet for an organized inventory, ownership adjustment and liquid-assets subtotal. Entries in the two methods are independent. A positive net worth does not establish that you have enough accessible money for an emergency or retirement.

Method and limits

Net worth equals included asset values minus included outstanding liabilities, in U.S. dollars. Use gross property values with debt listed separately. Business-interest values should already reflect entity-level debt; avoid counting the underlying assets and debts again. Asset ownership percentages do not determine legal responsibility for joint debts. This tool uses your supplied estimates and does not appraise assets, connect accounts, calculate taxes or selling costs, or project future net worth. Unknown and excluded items make the result partial; unused rows are not confirmed zero.

Liquid assets here mean accessible cash/deposits and readily saleable marketable investments outside restricted accounts. Restricted retirement balances and illiquid property remain separate. The subtotal is not liquid net worth or immediately spendable after-tax money. Values are rounded to cents after each ownership adjustment. Older item dates are flagged without revaluation; the 90-day review flag is a tool convention.
